hey all,
so i'm faced with a problem i'm sure lots of other people deal with too --
how to keep tablas sounding hot in club environments where ambient sound (specially low frequencies) is at really high levels.
i play tabla standing up, usually with one mic (a 57Beta) going into the USB on my laptop, then from the laptop out to a line in on the DJ mixer. When I'm playing within the Ableton environment, on top of breakbeats, if i crank the draw on the tablas i end up with the perpetual feedback issues :o(. Hate that. So i have to turn down all the backing tracks to like -20dB just to get the tablas to ride nice and high in the mix without feeding back all over the place. That means I can't pump the master volume, cause I've effectively brought everything coming in off the laptop down to really low levels... Sucks in a big club environment to not fill out the soundsystem
I guess the issue is that too much ambient sound is getting into the mic, but man, i really spend a lot of time trying to optimize position on stage to stay away from the bassbins and any monitors hanging around. So frustrating to not just be able to plug in and go!
Really has got me thinking about internal mics, but I've heard sound quality goes way down with them...
Any feedback much appreciated

Re: tabla in clubs: sound issues
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 8:38 AMTarun,
I just posted some more info to the thread, "Micing tabla, any ideas??"
Sounds to me like you need to follow Karsh Kale, Talvin Singh and others, using internal mics for volume and running through pedals, or live, and
externals for clarity.
I have Senheissers mounted internally, E604 in Dayan, E609 in Bayan. The E604, is the small egg looking mic usually seen on rack toms, and the E609 is a
flat mic usually seen micing guitar amps. The frequency ranges of these mics are perfectly situated for the tablas...and I have had great success with them.
You do need to run the mics through a pre-amp, I have one that was custom made for me for both mics in one small box as this will give you the power you are looking for.
I have although still been trying to tweak out some of the ugly sounding tones from the dayan, like a small "bongo" like chirp heard in "Na." I was able to do that by experimenting with a POD to try out different amp models and effects, also it has some small EQ options as well as good control over Gains and channel volumes etc, that has really helped!
Keep in mind, most people think internal mics on the drums would sound horrible but that is why some external treatment is necessary, and external mics used in conjunction is optimum!!
Hope all this helps, would love to hear your set!!
