Dear Tribe members

I m new to this tribe. Can anybody clear me what is meant by maatras (I mean ppl say 8 maatras in kaharva). How can we count the maatras.

Do we have any sites or link through which we learn tabla basics and taals.

Thanks,
Bhupesh

  • a matra is each basic pulse of a taal. Teen Taal has 16 matras, Japtaal has 10, Rupak has 7.

Here is Ektaal tekha played over the 12 matras

Dhin , Dhin , Dha Ge , Terekite
    Tu , Na , Kat , Ta
Dha Ge , Terekite , Dhin , Dha

    I hope that helps?
    • Hi thanks sameer......
now i m gettin somethin....but one query starts now....is there any rule to timing between all these matras.

I mean is there any technique to learn the timing between the matras.....

      • I think you may be asking about the basic divisions of a tala. Each tala has a specific "phrasing", grouping the total number of beats. So the 7 beats of Rupaktal are devided 3+2+2. There is also the "kali" beat, which is "open" or UNstressed. For any total number of beats there maybe many different talas, each with a particular division. So, 16 beats may be teental with 4+4+4+4 (kali on the 9th) but another tala may group 16 as 3+2+3+3+2+3 or 3+2+3+2+2+4 Based on these tala you have thekas, much more specific "phrasing".. sort of a rhythmic theme. Bols are used to communicate thekas verbally. The basic tala can be communicated with hand-claps marking the divisions and finger counts showing the beats of each division and open "wave" showing the kali beat

        Take a look at www.ancient-future.com/theka.html and www.pathcom.com/~ericp/tala.html
      • Hi Bupesh, I think I understand your question a little better now.

The timing between matras are equal once you establish your jati speed, meaning how many bols per matra. To feel the number of equally spaced bols between matras, practice a kaida at 1x speed, then shift the kaida to 1.5x, then again to 2x. When you do this properly, specific bols will always land on specific matras, after you change from 1x to 1.5x to 2.x jati, then those bols move to another matra, you should be able to calculate the shift to confirm you did it correctly. For example:

        Dha te te Dha
        te te Dha Dha
        te te Dha Ge
        Tu na Ke Na

at 1x, this composition can be played with two bols per matra.
Dha Te, Te Dha, Te Te, Dha Dha
Te Te, Dha Ge, Tu Na, Ke Na

at 1.5x, it will be 3 bols per matra
Dha te te, Dha te te,
Dha Dha Te, Te Dha Ge,
Tu Ne Ke, Na. Dha te,
        te ...

at 2x, it will be 4 bols per matra
        Dha te te Dha,
        te te Dha Dha,
        Te te Dha Ge,
        Tu Na Ke Na

        is that clearer?
