About how much does a set of tablas cost? Of course depending on the quitily and skill involved in making it. How would you determine the quality of a tabla ( ie Materials, skins, woods, etc )? And finally where can you find decent tablas to purchase?

I bought some from an Indian friend for about $275.....They are not professional grade. Probably student grade.

Re: Tabla price ranges
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 9:12 AMHey Brandon,
Check out a teahcer named David Courtney in houston...
chandrakantha.com is the web site, or just google David Courtney, tabla etc...
He has some excellent teaching materials and books that explain the craftsmanship of the tablas, what to look for, and what to look OUT for...
He has some of this info posted on the site..
David is my teacher and has been an incredible inspiration in learning tabla and probably has the most comprehensive program for study that
I have seen for teaching Westerners this complex instrument and theory!
Hope this helps!
