Tabla Study In India

Greetings, I am a 26 year old Tabla student who has studied for one year at the Ali Akbar College in Marin. I got stressed out by the cost of living in SF and moved back to my hometown of Kansas City, where my Tabla discipline tapered off dramatically. I am interested in going to India to study, but have heard that it is hard to find a good teacher among the many Tabla hustlers there. I trust my own discernment, but still have no idea where to go to study. Any ideas?

micing tablas any ideas?

hi,
i am thinking about putting mics inside of my tablas so all i do is plug them into a mixer and adjust the volume levels so i can play with live hand drums and still be heard. any ideas or thoughts about this? i am thinking i will silicone them to the center of the bottom facing up and run the wire under the rim of the drum under the head. i am also considering setting up my camper with a sound system that runs off of 12 volts i can plug into for camping. suggestions and words of wisdom? thanks in advance, rick

tabla in clubs: sound issues

hey all,

so i'm faced with a problem i'm sure lots of other people deal with too --
how to keep tablas sounding hot in club environments where ambient sound (specially low frequencies) is at really high levels.

i play tabla standing up, usually with one mic (a 57Beta) going into the USB on my laptop, then from the laptop out to a line in on the DJ mixer. When I'm playing within the Ableton environment, on top of breakbeats, if i crank the draw on the tablas i end up with the perpetual feedback issues :o(. Hate that. So i have to turn down all the backing tracks to like -20dB just to get the tablas to ride nice and high in the mix without feeding back all over the place. That means I can't pump the master volume, cause I've effectively brought everything coming in off the laptop down to really low levels... Sucks in a big club environment to not fill out the soundsystem

I guess the issue is that too much ambient sound is getting into the mic, but man, i really spend a lot of time trying to optimize position on stage to stay away from the bassbins and any monitors hanging around. So frustrating to not just be able to plug in and go!

Really has got me thinking about internal mics, but I've heard sound quality goes way down with them...

Any feedback much appreciated

Workshop Descriptions:

11:00 am – 12:30 pm: Beginning Drumming workshop for Drummers Essential Techniques & Rhythms for the Tabla: This class is geared for musicians and will cover basic techniques & drills for the tabla as well as an introduction to Middle Eastern Rhythms. All levels from novice to intermediate and advanced will benefit from Issam’s detailed teaching style.

1:00 – 2:30 pm: Intermediate/Advanced Drumming workshop for Drummers Issam will teach intermediate/advanced strokes and techniques for the tabla. Issam will also teach a formula for creating drum solos for dancers. ***Attendees of this workshop must possess basic drumming skills***

3:30 – 5:00 pm: Rhythm for Dancers This workshop is geared primarily toward the dancer. Issam will teach the rhythms that are most common in Middle Eastern music so that the dancer may understand the structure of the rhythms and the sounds of the tabla. Includes short combinations of dance moves for each of the rhythms and how to dance to a live drummer. This knowledge will improve both your choreographed and improvisation performances. ***Attendees do not need drums for this class.

Fem Tabla players

Tabla seems to be the only Indian instrument I have never come across a fem player that reached the level of acknowledgement as Sharan Rani (sarod) or Mita Nag (sitar). Know of any? Obviously there are fem members of this tribe. Do any of you play the instrument? Anyone from/in India: do the traditional tabla gharanas exclude women?

Fiberglass Tabla

Sometime during the 70's I owned a set of tabla that were weighted, fiberglass bodied. The weighted bottoms gave them a really solid feel, And, of course, no denting, warping or checking. Does anyone know who, if anyone, is still marketing them? Thanks

Anubrata was nurtured from day one to be a tabla player. He had the rare fortune of being the youngest and last "ganda-bandh" (ritually consecrated discipleship) student of the great Guru Padmabhushan-Deshkottam Jnan Prakash Ghosh in 1992. Later, for illness, his guru advised Anubrata to continue under the tutelage of his "most successful" disciple who is none other than Anubrata's father, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee.

Anubrata has had the honor to make music with the world's leading artists including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Rais Khan, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Shahid Parvez, and Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.

teachers - bangladesh

While I know it should be easy to find a tabla teacher here I am struggling to figure out where to go to get lessons - I'm living in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Does anyone have an recommendations? Small problem is that my Bangla is pretty minimal so I am probably after private lessons with a teach who has good English language skills. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations?

Aloha from Maui - Sitar and tabla student of Harihar Rao in the mid '70s. I generally use tabla for classical raga improvs but I also play tabla tekas on other hand-drums.. lol.. drives djembe drumcircle players crazy!

Here to share knowledge and experiences I had as Harihar's student.

One thing I'll never forget.... each week Hari would review the lesson, playing progressively double-timed, until it was so fast his hands were but a blur, but I made an amazing realization.... condensing the long variations into such a small capsule made it really easy it remember them. It was almost like translating a long composition into a single phrase.

Second, the most difficult pieces to perform are the vilambit , extremely slow thekas. Keeping strict time very slowly is much more difficult than playing the drut swift thekas. The tendency to rush certain strokes when playing especially slow is the challenge.

Any tabla players in San Luis Obispo?

I am a kirtan artist and will be doing programs in SLO. I play the harmonium and sing bhajans - some traditional call-and response, and some of them my own compositions. I am usually accompanied by a tabla player, and sometimes add mrdangam and/or kohl. If you play Middle Eastern drums, and have experience with kirtan that could be good.

Punjabi, Rajasthani and other folk dance rhythms from India

I was in an Indian restaurant tonight and they were
playing some Punjabi music that didn't have very much
western influence in it.

I love simple dance rhythms from all over the planet and have researched extensively
for a multi- volume tome called Global Beats and World Pop Styles.

I have serious holes in my knowledge, however, when it comes to some of these beautiful
rhythms that come from folk dancing tradtions across the enormity of India.

Does anyone know where I can find out the names of rhythms from different regions
that are NOT classical Indian rhythms?

I've transcribed several that were played on tabla, dhol, mrdangam (sp?) and other very simple instruments.

I wasn't sure which tribe to join to ask this question but I figure you are all tabla players so this might be a good start.

Thanks so much and with great respect to all the musical tradtions of India................certainly one of the deepest tradtions
that exist on our planet.

backpacking packing tips?

hey...
so the good news is i'm going hiking in kaui...
the other good news is that i'm going strong on daily practice...

so combining those two, looks like i'll be backpacking with my tabla.
any tips on how best to pack them in a hiking backpack?
thinking the bhayan on the bottom with the tabla on top makes sense for care of the drums, but that the tabla being so much heavier than the bhayan means maybe it should be lower on the back. anybody done this?
tips on care in the jungle?
i know this set might wind up thrashed from the experience...
plan to get a new set after, but want to minimize damage nonetheless.

Dhamaal welcomes internationally renowned producer and dj Cheb i Sabbah (Six Degrees) and dhol champion Mitch Hyare. Also Maneesh the Twister & Kush Arora will perform a live laptop/dj hybrid dub set. looking for tabla player in LA

hi,
i'm a composer who works in electro-acoustic music.
i have done a lot of work in polymeter, using drum kit, and would like to collaborate with a very good tabla player, a virtuoso really, to explore concepts in polymeter. part of the reason i am doing this is from working with a tabla player before on the nature of a tihai which was played at 1x, 3/2x, then 2x speed. I worked it out algabraically, and have never been the same. i also have experience in djembe.

anyway, please contact me. i have no money, but this would be a fruitful collaboration for a talented musician.

tabla on the playa - care and feeding?

Hi all-

It looks like I'll be bringing a tabla set to Burning Man with me this year, and I'm wondering if any of you folks have had experience with taking your drums into extreme environments. The days are hot, the nights are cold, and it's very dry and dusty (until it rains, which it sometimes does!). Any tips? Thanks!

I want to get a nice full gallery going here - I have many pics and drawings that inspire me so much that I need to scan in and upload... sooooo, yes, upload your pics of you playing tabla or your tabla or your teacher etc... I have a funny one of Zakir Ji from when I studied with him a few years back... I might post it but possibly something more serious of him would be better.... :)

He is amazing so Im sure all of you in the master class out there now are having a total blast and in tabla heaven!!!! GOOD LUCK and PLAY HARD!!!! Im sure you all will!

Need help deciding what tabla quality is best!

I want to buy a set - I think they are lovely instruments and want to learn to play. However, all the sets I see around town are pretty crappy looking.
Does anyone know what to look for in a NICE high quality tabla set? What distinguishes it from the cheap, poorly made ones?

The president of India crowned him with the prestigious "Sangeet Natak Academy Award" in 2003. The All India critics association adjudged him as the Best Performer of the Year 1997 and at the tender age of 16, already the Government of India recognized his prodigious talent by awarding him the Gold Medal in the All India Radio Music Competition. Pandit Anindo Chatterjee has carved out a niche for himself for his tabla solos for which he is one of the most popular and in-demand performers. He has achieved the most aesthetically satisfying combination of tradition and innovation in the field of Tabla.

Anindo's ability to weave the most intricate textures with tabla bols (syllables) and to remain uncompromising crispness and clarity at virtually any speed has seen him adding new dimensions to his instrument. He is a trend-setter for many generations to follow.

Anindo Chatterjee is recognized as one of India's most eminent tabla players. Inspired by his uncle, the sitarist Pandit Biswanath Chatterjee, Chatterjee began playing tabla at the age of four, at five he was All India Radio's youngest artiste. At six Anindo became a disciple of Padmabhushan Gyan Prakash Ghosh, and studied with him for almost 30 years. His guidance gave Anindo's art a firm foundation. Gifted with an ability to summon crystal-clear melodies from his drums, Anindo Chatterjee evolved into one of the world's greatest tabla players. Today, he is considered the director of the Farukhabad Gharana of Tabla, founded by Haji Vilayat Khan Saheb, and has accompanied all of the top musicians (Notably, sitarist Pandit Nikil Banerjee) and has toured with them all over the world. He has received numerous honors including Presidents Award in 1970 and performed in the House of Commons in 1990.

There's NO substitute for a real player - but for music programmers a decent set of sampled tablas can be a very handy thing!

We have put together a free tabla patch for the emagic EXS24 (all samples in WAV format). The tablas were played by Ravi Majevadia whilst recording the debut album from Reactor last year. With some careful programming/playing they can make a very useful sound..
