Tabla Study In India

Greetings, I am a 26 year old Tabla student who has studied for one year at the Ali Akbar College in Marin. I got stressed out by the cost of living in SF and moved back to my hometown of Kansas City, where my Tabla discipline tapered off dramatically. I am interested in going to India to study, but have heard that it is hard to find a good teacher among the many Tabla hustlers there. I trust my own discernment, but still have no idea where to go to study. Any ideas?

micing tablas any ideas?

hi,
i am thinking about putting mics inside of my tablas so all i do is plug them into a mixer and adjust the volume levels so i can play with live hand drums and still be heard. any ideas or thoughts about this? i am thinking i will silicone them to the center of the bottom facing up and run the wire under the rim of the drum under the head. i am also considering setting up my camper with a sound system that runs off of 12 volts i can plug into for camping. suggestions and words of wisdom? thanks in advance, rick

tabla in clubs: sound issues

hey all,

so i'm faced with a problem i'm sure lots of other people deal with too --
how to keep tablas sounding hot in club environments where ambient sound (specially low frequencies) is at really high levels.

i play tabla standing up, usually with one mic (a 57Beta) going into the USB on my laptop, then from the laptop out to a line in on the DJ mixer. When I'm playing within the Ableton environment, on top of breakbeats, if i crank the draw on the tablas i end up with the perpetual feedback issues :o(. Hate that. So i have to turn down all the backing tracks to like -20dB just to get the tablas to ride nice and high in the mix without feeding back all over the place. That means I can't pump the master volume, cause I've effectively brought everything coming in off the laptop down to really low levels... Sucks in a big club environment to not fill out the soundsystem

I guess the issue is that too much ambient sound is getting into the mic, but man, i really spend a lot of time trying to optimize position on stage to stay away from the bassbins and any monitors hanging around. So frustrating to not just be able to plug in and go!

Really has got me thinking about internal mics, but I've heard sound quality goes way down with them...

Any feedback much appreciated

About how much does a set of tablas cost? Of course depending on the quitily and skill involved in making it. How would you determine the quality of a tabla ( ie Materials, skins, woods, etc )? And finally where can you find decent tablas to purchase?

About Issam Houshan

The union of music and movement is the essence of dance. The union of a musician and a dancer to create a seamless artistic expression is the ultimate manifestation of such a union. Issam Houshan does exactly that. Call him the “Wassan Pharaoun,” “King of the Drum,” or “Mr. Magic Fingers” and you only tell the half of it. His connection to the dancer is the essence of his magic, a merging of egos serving a mutual and identical goal. Issam is now recognized as the ultimate master of this art. An international music star, his past credits include touring with Sting in 2000, performing at the Grammys on the hit single Desert Rose, as well as performing and recording with countless Arab stars. In addition, he has toured with the Mile Copeland-produced Bellydance Superstars, the world’s premiere professional touring bellydancer performance group since 2003, with whom he has appeared in over 1000 shows in 16 countries over the past three years.

A highly accomplished percussionist on assorted Arab hand drums, Issam was formally trained at the Damascus Academy of Music and is the only remaining disciple of the legendary Arab drum master Mahmood Salahadeen. An accomplished and sought-after music instructor, he taught at the Damascus Music Institute for nine years and continues to teach workshops and private lessons around the world. Unequaled in his field, Issam is known by fellow Syrian musicians as the Wassan Pharaoun (Pharaoh of Rhythm) and his al assaben al Sahriha (magic fingers) are currently insured for 10 million dollars (1 million each).

His drum solos with the Bellydance Superstars are major features of each show, as captured in the films American Bellydancer, Solos from Monte Carlo, Bellydance Superstars, 30 Days to Vegas, Behind the Shimmy, and the instructional DVD The Art of the Drum Solo. His CD releases include his own Wassan Pharaoun, The Dancing Drum and Tabel Ya Issam, as well as percussion on the Galactic Caravan albums.

Maga Bo in SF for OuterWORLDLY - this Fri Oct. 12th!

(from Rio) MAGA BO at OuterWORLDLY

dj set of transnational urban bass music from hip hop, kwaito, ragga to baile funk with flares of samba and bhangra

this Friday October 12th @ Madrone Lounge (500 Divisadero St. at Fell)
10pm $5 before 11pm and $10 after
21+ drink specials

with the Worker and Janaka Selekta open with global tech and breakbeats..

Based in Rio de Janeiro, Maga Bo is a DJ/producer working with an international collision of styles, sounds, location recordings from all continents and beats that are hard to classify. A study in the digital contortions of transnational breakbeat based bass music, his sound is an amalgamation of batucada, rai, capoeira, bhangra, loudspeaker jitter and skewed electronic beats in a borderless alley of gritty street sounds, found, stolen and modified rhythms and melodies from Brazil, Morocco, India and beyond.

His performances are a hybrid mix of DJ set and a live PA where pirate cassettes bought on the street in various parts of the world, MP3s from the internet, obscure vinyl found in underground shops meet original beats, unreleased remixes and exclusive tracks.

Tabla seems to be the only Indian instrument I have never come across a fem player that reached the level of acknowledgement as Sharan Rani (sarod) or Mita Nag (sitar). Know of any? Obviously there are fem members of this tribe. Do any of you play the instrument? Anyone from/in India: do the traditional tabla gharanas exclude women?

Fiberglass Tabla

Sometime during the 70's I owned a set of tabla that were weighted, fiberglass bodied. The weighted bottoms gave them a really solid feel, And, of course, no denting, warping or checking. Does anyone know who, if anyone, is still marketing them? Thanks

Aloha from Maui

Saturday, Jun 9 Anubrata Chatterjee Tabla Solo and Workshop, San Francisco/Berkeley

Anubrata Chatterjee - solo tabla
accompanied by Gautam Tejas Ganeshan - violin

The Sangati Center
3049 22nd Street @ Shotwell Street
SF, CA 94110
http://www.sangaticenter.org

Saturday June 9th
8:00pm
$20 - $25

http://www.sangaticenter.org/events/chatterjee60907.html

Having performed a thrilling tabla duet performance last year at the Sangati Center with his father, the renowned tabla artist Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Anubrata returns for a solo performance that bay area fans of rhythmic virtuosity and occult drumming powers will not want to be absent for.

Anubrata was nurtured from day one to be a tabla player. He had the rare fortune of being the youngest and last "ganda-bandh" (ritually consecrated discipleship) student of the great Guru Padmabhushan-Deshkottam Jnan Prakash Ghosh in 1992. Later, for illness, his guru advised Anubrata to continue under the tutelage of his "most successful" disciple who is none other than Anubrata's father, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee.

Anubrata has had the honor to make music with the world's leading artists including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Rais Khan, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Shahid Parvez, and Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.

Anubrata has been granted many awards and honors including the President's Gold Medal (of India!) after winning the first prize in the All-India-Radio music competition, the Pandit Nikhil Ghosh Memorial Award for being the most promising musician of 2002, and the Guru Kelacharan Mohapatra Award in 2004 - Guru Kelacharan Mohapatra was the most revered artist of Odissi classical Indian dance during his lifetime.

While I know it should be easy to find a tabla teacher here I am struggling to figure out where to go to get lessons - I'm living in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Does anyone have an recommendations? Small problem is that my Bangla is pretty minimal so I am probably after private lessons with a teach who has good English language skills. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations?

Aloha from Maui - Sitar and tabla student of Harihar Rao in the mid '70s. I generally use tabla for classical raga improvs but I also play tabla tekas on other hand-drums.. lol.. drives djembe drumcircle players crazy!

Here are a couple of samples using a conga drum to play thekas Ektal and Chautal behind other Western instruments

Raga Bilawal - Ektal... http://www.esnips.com/doc/d2d81939-2531-4e0d-b612-4facb38fa57e/sitar-ektal
Raga Hemant - Chautal .... http://www.esnips.com/doc/c55adcb3-d071-40e3-bede-f50ca20b3651/hemant

Here to share knowledge and experiences I had as Harihar's student.

One thing I'll never forget.... each week Hari would review the lesson, playing progressively double-timed, until it was so fast his hands were but a blur, but I made an amazing realization.... condensing the long variations into such a small capsule made it really easy it remember them. It was almost like translating a long composition into a single phrase.

Second, the most difficult pieces to perform are the vilambit , extremely slow thekas. Keeping strict time very slowly is much more difficult than playing the drut swift thekas. The tendency to rush certain strokes when playing especially slow is the challenge.

I've been putting English words to the tabla compositions for a little while, and finally I made a video to show just what the heck I am talking about.

First there is a simple gat and then an English poem set to the melody and rhythm of the gat. The tabla bol-s and English words can be found in my profile photo.

I am a kirtan artist and will be doing programs in SLO. I play the harmonium and sing bhajans - some traditional call-and response, and some of them my own compositions. I am usually accompanied by a tabla player, and sometimes add mrdangam and/or kohl. If you play Middle Eastern drums, and have experience with kirtan that could be good.
I'm aware of Riyaz Studio, but its for PC, and Swar Systems at a whopping 200 smackers. Anyone know of someplace to even find some lehras to practise to. Thanx.

Punjabi, Rajasthani and other folk dance rhythms from India

I was in an Indian restaurant tonight and they were
playing some Punjabi music that didn't have very much
western influence in it.

I love simple dance rhythms from all over the planet and have researched extensively
for a multi- volume tome called Global Beats and World Pop Styles.

I have serious holes in my knowledge, however, when it comes to some of these beautiful
rhythms that come from folk dancing tradtions across the enormity of India.

Does anyone know where I can find out the names of rhythms from different regions
that are NOT classical Indian rhythms?

I've transcribed several that were played on tabla, dhol, mrdangam (sp?) and other very simple instruments.

I wasn't sure which tribe to join to ask this question but I figure you are all tabla players so this might be a good start.

Thanks so much and with great respect to all the musical tradtions of India................certainly one of the deepest tradtions
that exist on our planet.

Namaste and Peace Out

“Tablas & Turntables” is an innovative class that instrument inventor Walter Kitundu and Robin Sukhadia have created for at risk high school kids in Colorado. Please take a look at this video link, and Greenlight the video to help my friends win. The competition highlights non-fiction videos that explore the theme of tolerance, which may include topics such as racism, sexism, homophobia, or issues related to class, disability, age or religion.

I need a new Benares head for my tabla. Can you reccommend anyone who is good, trustworthy and timely, who can put a high-quality Benares head on my tabla? I live in Miami and am willing to mail it to someone. Straps must be made out of skin also, not rope. Thanks!
p.s.--if there's any tabla players in Miami please say hi!

backpacking packing tips?

hey...
so the good news is i'm going hiking in kaui...
the other good news is that i'm going strong on daily practice...

so combining those two, looks like i'll be backpacking with my tabla.
any tips on how best to pack them in a hiking backpack?
thinking the bhayan on the bottom with the tabla on top makes sense for care of the drums, but that the tabla being so much heavier than the bhayan means maybe it should be lower on the back. anybody done this?
tips on care in the jungle?
i know this set might wind up thrashed from the experience...
plan to get a new set after, but want to minimize damage nonetheless.
thanks
xy

In January 2001 over 15 million pilgrims gathered at the confluence of India’s 3 greatest rivers, turning a vast flood plane into a thriving festival of humanity and devotion. This is the largest congregation of people in the history of the World.
This is the Maha Kumbh Mela.

“Take Me To The River” is a documentary film directed by Kenneth Eng and Produced by Projectile Arts. It takes the viewer directly into the heart of this historic event in an experiential instead of analytical style.

Omkara is a Classical Indian and Fusion musical ensemble.

Saxophone legend Charles Lloyd and tabla master Zakir Hussain are joined by drummer Eric Harland for an evening of cross cultural music that has mesmerized audiences around the world. Charles Lloyd, at age 67, has shifted into high gear, surpassing his remarkable work from the late 60's, when he recorded one of the first jazz records to sell a million copies (Forest Flower, recorded live at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1966). This might be your last opportunity to see this legend in Atlanta.

Just wanted to post about my recent book, Global Beat Fusion:

http://www.globalbeatfusion.com

It is about international electronica and world mythology, but began as a book about South Asian music inpsired by Karsh (I subsequently threw a weekly DJ party with him for 9 months in New York called Kollektiv). The book is heavy on Indian music in general, as well as the Gypsy connection from India to the creation of flamenco and Balkan music, and lots of great interviews, including Karsh, Zakir, Bill Laswell, Cheb i Sabbah, Ojos de Brujo, Krishna Das, and a host of DJs and musicians...

looking for tabla player in LA

hi,
i'm a composer who works in electro-acoustic music.
i have done a lot of work in polymeter, using drum kit, and would like to collaborate with a very good tabla player, a virtuoso really, to explore concepts in polymeter. part of the reason i am doing this is from working with a tabla player before on the nature of a tihai which was played at 1x, 3/2x, then 2x speed. I worked it out algabraically, and have never been the same. i also have experience in djembe.

anyway, please contact me. i have no money, but this would be a fruitful collaboration for a talented musician.

thanks
scott

Hi all-

It looks like I'll be bringing a tabla set to Burning Man with me this year, and I'm wondering if any of you folks have had experience with taking your drums into extreme environments. The days are hot, the nights are cold, and it's very dry and dusty (until it rains, which it sometimes does!). Any tips? Thanks!

I want to buy a set - I think they are lovely instruments and want to learn to play. However, all the sets I see around town are pretty crappy looking.
Does anyone know what to look for in a NICE high quality tabla set? What distinguishes it from the cheap, poorly made ones?

The president of India crowned him with the prestigious "Sangeet Natak Academy Award" in 2003. The All India critics association adjudged him as the Best Performer of the Year 1997 and at the tender age of 16, already the Government of India recognized his prodigious talent by awarding him the Gold Medal in the All India Radio Music Competition. Pandit Anindo Chatterjee has carved out a niche for himself for his tabla solos for which he is one of the most popular and in-demand performers. He has achieved the most aesthetically satisfying combination of tradition and innovation in the field of Tabla.

Anindo's ability to weave the most intricate textures with tabla bols (syllables) and to remain uncompromising crispness and clarity at virtually any speed has seen him adding new dimensions to his instrument. He is a trend-setter for many generations to follow.

Anindo Chatterjee is recognized as one of India's most eminent tabla players. Inspired by his uncle, the sitarist Pandit Biswanath Chatterjee, Chatterjee began playing tabla at the age of four, at five he was All India Radio's youngest artiste. At six Anindo became a disciple of Padmabhushan Gyan Prakash Ghosh, and studied with him for almost 30 years. His guidance gave Anindo's art a firm foundation. Gifted with an ability to summon crystal-clear melodies from his drums, Anindo Chatterjee evolved into one of the world's greatest tabla players. Today, he is considered the director of the Farukhabad Gharana of Tabla, founded by Haji Vilayat Khan Saheb, and has accompanied all of the top musicians (Notably, sitarist Pandit Nikil Banerjee) and has toured with them all over the world. He has received numerous honors including Presidents Award in 1970 and performed in the House of Commons in 1990.

In addition to solo performances and recordings, Chatterjee worked with sitar players Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Budhahitya Mukherjee, and Ustad Rais Khan; sarod players Buddhadev Das Gupta and Ali Akbar Kahn; flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia; santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma

Hi Everyone,

There's NO substitute for a real player - but for music programmers a decent set of sampled tablas can be a very handy thing!

We have put together a free tabla patch for the emagic EXS24 (all samples in WAV format). The tablas were played by Ravi Majevadia whilst recording the debut album from Reactor last year. With some careful programming/playing they can make a very useful sound..

Here's a short demo: http://www.reactor-site.com/samples/reactor_tablas_clip.mp3

The tablas and a collection of other free instruments are available from http://www.realfeel.freeuk.com/samples.htm

The Reactor website is - http://www.reactorsite.com

Hello Friends,

Thank you for coming out to Worldly III – it is going to be incredible!

In order to streamline the process of getting you into 1015 Folsom I have created the printable pdf that is attached.

The Ticket
http://www.dhamaalsf.com/Worldly/Volume3/May1015Ticket.pdf

The Flash Flyer
http://dhamaalsf.com/flyers/worldly3/worldly03Flyer.htm

1. Print it out and bring it the event
2. Show it to the 1015 Folsom Box Office Staff for 15$ Entrance
3. Important: Each person that wants to get on the 15$ List must have a printout
4. You can forward this email to friends so they can make a print out too

The link also has information about the space, performances and where each room is – 1015 Folsom is a big club and having a copy of the attachment to look at will be useful (make an extra copy though since you will have to surrender one copy to get the $15 discount entrance).

Dhamaal Celebrates SIX YEARS On 23 April 2005 @ Club Six

Much love and respect to all the wonderful people that have supported the Dhamaal Collective over the past six years - Thank You!

Last year we passed some incredible milestones - things that we would have have never envisaged when we started throwing events at 111 Minna in 1999 amidst the transitory glow of the dotcom boom. With the release of our second original music EP 'Transitions' front and center we continue to evolve our sound through each performance.

Last year was exemplified by Janaka's exclamation to Maneesh and Dhruva - 'Can you believe that Dr. Das of Asian Dub Foundation is playing on our tracks!'

Can you believe that we plan to take things further this year than any year before?

Join in this Saturday @ Club Six where we will be performing original songs, dropping unreleased Dhamaal remixes of Asian Dub Foundation's new album, slamming dance music performed by world class DJs, cutting edge live video mixes, live Classical Indian and Pakistani folk music from artists representing a 500 year musical lineage and much more! Plus Special Guest Dub Gabriel.

Dhamaal's Video DJs Skip Into & El Diablo whose performances have been mesmerizing audiences brings Dhamaal to your computer -

Hey everyone.
My good friend DJ Peter Madril suggested I join Tribe so here I am. When I found the Tabla tribe, I get very excited.
We are mixing it up here in Seattle with live tracks plus tabla.
If you ever in town, check us out.
Are there any musicians out there who want to network and make some tracks?
peace,

I love tabla. I own tabla. I don't even know where to begin to learn! I've had trouble locating a teacher whose schedule will work with mine. Any contact suggestions are much appreciated.

Hear Tabla playing on bhangra tracks you will be surprised by

Kush -BhangraIndustrial Dancehall Madness from San Francisco
featuring tabla by Robin Sukhadia available online now

Hello, this is Kush Arora from RecordLabelRecords, based here in San Francisco Bay Area. I want to turn you on to my cd "Underwater Jihad"and upcomign cd "Bhang Ragga" which is basically a whole new direction of industrial music, punjabi bhangra, and dancehall, experimental sounds- putting it together in a non jungle/sample cd beats form, and giving it to you raw from the dark side of the asian underground that seems to be completely absent in the world today - tackling the ridiculous politics of today, living in 9/11 america with idiots, and a hate for freemasons.
Here I take vocalists from Jamaica, India, and beyond with live dhol, tabla, tumbi, double flute, insane dancehall and bhangra beats mashed together in a sound design futuristic style and much more. A dub style from beyond right now for all desi youth brought up in this country and all over who refuse to let their entire musical heritage be summed up by a bunch of sleazy club producers who just rip other people off like leeches- You will find no bad desis trying to rap or be dreadlocks, catchy club mixes that sound like 50 cent with out of time dhols, or adult contemporary "indian electronic" music. RecordLabelRecords is here to show these forms of music approached from a progression point of view, not commercial approval.
Check it- practicaly half the album is given away on the site and the newer tracks can be found directly here- posted today. Also, view the upcoming issue of XLR8R magazine to get tracks by me and other RLR artists with the magazine.

seek l.a. tabla teacher

greetings,

i play tabla, and need to find a new teacher.
i live in east los angeles county.
i seek a teacher in traditional style from india,
tho i am flexible on what lineage and willing to meet
a few teachers to find the right fit.
can only afford a lesson a month of so,
but it'd be good to check in on my technigue
break bad habits, learn new beats...

my only teacher i've studied with was from the punjab garana,
actually on the pakistani side of punjab. (sp?)
i studied once a week for 6 months in 2001.
have retained the practice of dadra tal, teental, and rupek,
with rupek being my fave...
i'd like to learn more beats with synchopation,
and would also like to learn more variations on teental
and some techniques to play accompaniment to raga and kirtan.

so, i humbly ask if anyone here feels they'd be a good fit as a teacher, or knows any recommendations within a 1-2 hour drive radius: la, venice, ojai, pasadena, joshua tree, san diego.
thanks!

I've asked my teacher about polyrhythms in tabla, but he doesn't seem to know anything about that. I know that southern Indian music uses polyrhythms, but I wonder how it is applied to tabla? Anybody know? I'm talking about stuff like 7:4 and not things like grouping 5/5/5/8 or 3/7/3/3 etc.
